First Day in Qatar

USA Basketball Team Leader, B.J. Johnson provides a daily schedule of the when, what, and wheres for the team.  Here is our schedule for today:

Today's schedule

Breakfast in the Flying Carpet Restaurant
in our hotel

Practice at the Aspire Dome

After practice and lunch we all walked to one of Doha's largest shopping malls via an air-conditioned bridge from our hotel.  It is HOT here with the average daytime temperature about 105 and lows at 90!
Back at the hotel many had a nap as we are all still adjusting to the time change.  At 6:00 we departed for the scrimmage which means to either walk the short distance or catch a ride on one of the golf carts.

Traveling Day(s)

The trip started on Saturday in Colorado Springs (departed the Olympic Training Center at 8:00 am) and ended on Sunday in Doha, Qatar about 5:30 pm.  It was a LONG trip but all endured it well.  Qatar time is 7 hours ahead of Central Time in my home state of Iowa.
Bus Ride to Denver airport - 1 1/2 hours
Leg One – Denver to Washington DC    3 hours
Leg Two – DC to Dubai    13 hours
Leg Three – Dubai to Doha, Qatar    45 minutes
Bus Ride – from airport to The Torch   45 minutes

From start to finish the trip took 26 hours for the flights, bus, wait, and lay over time.  The DC to Dubai flight took off at 6:30 pm and most managed to sleep through the over-night flight.

Packed and boarding the bus at the Olympic Training Center

The flight from Dubai to Qatar
The pilot allowed all of us to move into business class!

Too bad the flight was only about 45 minutes because
we all loved business class!

After going through a light practice we walked back to the hotel for a buffet at the Flying Carpet Restaurant.  It was international night and the food was plentiful and delicious.

Back to Work

After pictures it was back to work in the classroom and gym. The team held their last practice at the Olympic Training Center on Friday, August 1.

At the end of practice the team always "circles up" and today they told what they were looking forward to (besides winning a GOLD medal) on this trip.

The USA Uniforms!

The team members received their USA uniforms this morning! Each received a card indicating players who have previously worn that USA number. Team and individual pictures were taken in the uniforms.  I think it really hit what an honor it is to represent our country as they put on the uniform!
